What is agentic AI? How AI agents actually get work done
A chatbot answers a question. An AI agent takes a goal, works out the steps, uses your tools and keeps going until the job is done — checking in with a person when it should.
The short answer: agentic AI is AI that acts, not just answers. An AI agent combines a large language model with tools and a goal, then runs in a loop — plan, act, observe the result, decide the next step — until the task is complete.
The agent loop
- Goal. The agent receives a task: “Qualify this new lead and book a call if it’s a fit.”
- Plan. The model decides what it needs: company details, budget signals, calendar availability.
- Act. It calls tools — a web lookup, your CRM, your calendar — instead of only writing text.
- Observe. It reads what the tools returned and checks progress against the goal.
- Repeat or hand off. It continues, finishes, or escalates to a person when a rule says so.
Chatbot, automation or agent?
| Chatbot | Workflow automation | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who decides the steps | The user, one message at a time | A fixed, pre-built flow | The agent, within limits you set |
| Uses your tools | Rarely | Yes, in a fixed order | Yes, chosen as needed |
| Handles the unexpected | Only in conversation | Poorly | Well, if designed for it |
| Best for | Questions and drafts | Predictable, repeatable work | Multi-step work that varies case to case |
Most good systems mix all three: fixed automation where the path is known, an agent where judgment is needed, and a person for the decisions that matter most.
Guardrails that make agents safe
- Least privilege. An agent gets only the tools and data its task needs — read-only wherever possible.
- Approval gates. Sending money, emailing customers or deleting data waits for a human yes.
- Logs for everything. Every step and tool call is recorded so you can see what happened and why.
- Evaluation before launch. Agents are tested on real examples and improved through a continuous engineering loop.
- The right model per step. Simple yes/no decisions go to fast, low-cost decision models; the large model handles the reasoning.
Where agents fit in your business
Good candidates are jobs that take several steps across several systems and vary from case to case: lead qualification, customer onboarding, order exceptions, research and data enrichment, first-line support triage. SEGULA LABS builds these as part of our smart systems and AI automation work, with the guardrails above built in from day one.

FAQ
Common questions.
What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?
A chatbot replies to one message at a time. An agent is given a goal and can plan several steps, call tools such as your CRM, email or database, look at the results and decide what to do next until the goal is reached.
Is it safe to let an AI agent act on its own?
It is when the agent's permissions are limited to what the task needs, risky actions require human approval, every action is logged, and the agent has been tested on real examples before it goes live.
What is a good first AI agent for a small business?
A narrow, well-defined job with clear success criteria, such as qualifying new leads, preparing quotes for review, or researching and enriching contact records.
